The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Heritage Academy will present an imaginative retelling of Victor Hugo’s classic story “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” on Friday, Nov. 20, and Saturday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium.

Esmeralda (Chloe Prejean) captures many hearts, including those of Captain Phoebus (Ben Jackson) Quasimodo (Noah Scahill) and his adoptive father, Archdeacon Claude Frollo (Khalid Smith). Frollo is torn between his obsessive interest and obedience to the church. He orders Quasimodo to kidnap Esmeralda, but the hunchback is captured by Phoebus and his guards. Will Esmeralda remain a prisoner? Who will help her escape? Will true love evidence itself through sacrifice? The audience will learn the answers to those questions and will see that contained within the entertainment of the play is a valuable lesson: True beauty is found not on the outside but rather in the heart.

Other cast members include Janelle Armstrong, Abigail Barnes, Gaby Bogdanoff, Samantha Hendershot, Spencer Nigh, Maelynne Patey, Colby Reese, Evan Runkles, Leanna Shank, William Sims, Emily Stamper and Ava Stegall.
Students helping with the play also include Hannah Barnes and Maddi Runkles, stage crew; James Robinson and Will Faith, lighting crew; Dalton Hornbarger, video; and David Fisler, sound.
According to christianplays.net, the play features a large cast of colorful characters and a story to keep the whole family on the edge of their seats.

The play is directed by Sara Swacina, art and drama teacher at the school. Admission is by donation.
Play attendees can plan to have dinner before the show on either evening. On Friday night, the sophomore class will offer soups and subs from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and ice cream with toppings after the show. The drama department will host an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner on Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
